Tunnel 2004

Date: Thursday 15 jul 2021 - Friday 30 Dec 2022

Grand-Brûlé lava tunnel

These days, potholers are seen as the last explorers of the planet. With the advent of satellite maps and other aerial images every nook and cranny on earth can be seen by the human eye.

Dig deeper, go and lose yourself, enter into the matrix and discover new horizons. There is no technical equipment, no narrow passages where you have to crawl on your stomach, just a gentle exploration of what lies behind the scenes.
Acetylene lamps light up a new world where unlikely forms and shimmering colours mingle, as only nature knows how.
This spectacle gives an insight into how a volcano is created and the landscape outside takes on a new meaning.

meet at 9am.
After the presentation about the equipment, a quick 10 minutes’ walk along the slabs of grey basalt on the surface leads to an entry duct.
Then you enter the depths of the volcano, spending approximately 2.5hrs underground to admire the superb formations created by the cooling lava flow as it slowed down after an eruption.
Following the slalom course between the natural pillars created by the lava flowing around trees, you will discover magnificent bulbous stalagmites, imprints of tree trunks in the wall of a world which seemed metallic and frozen, only a few seconds ago.
The fine hair roots of the "bois de chapelet" that criss-cross the tunnel here and there remind us that life goes on up above.
Ends at: around 12.30pm.
